NARRATIVE
2022 happily witnessed the return of a unabbreviated
Karthigai Deepam Festival at Arunachala following several years of
limited, restricted celebrations because of a health pandemic.
The Flag Hoisting ceremony denoting the official commencement of the
Festival took place at Arunachaleswarar Temple between 5.30am-7.00am on
Sunday November 27, 2022.
Massive crowds daily lined the perimeter streets of Arunachaleswarar
Temple to view the chariot processions around the perimeter streets
(mada veedhis) of the Big Temple.
Bharani Deepam was observed at 4.00 a.m. on Tuesday December 6, 2022 and
the lighting of Mahadeepam on Arunachala occurred around 6.00 pm (dusk)
on that same day.

Temple Lights
The electrification of the Temple was, as always, excellent.
Special Functions
As the 2022 Karthigai Deepam Festival returned to its more established
and traditional programme, a number of Special Functions (see below)
were highlighted during the Festival. One of the most eagerly
anticipated and best attended of all the processional functions of the
Deepam Festival was that of the 7th Day and the giant Maharadham (wooden
chariot) which was drawn by devotees around the Temple perimeter
streets (i.e. mada veedhis).
